Stage 17 Facts: Week 6, 42 - 44 days, 11 - 14 mm

This movie shows the size of both the extra-embryonic spaces and the embryo by week 6 of development.

Each sac has its own covering membrane composed of, and formed from, different embryonic cell layers.
Chorionic sac - is almost completely occupied by the amniotic sac. Earlier in development, this was a large fluid-filled space. The chorionic frondosum (upper half) is densely covered in chorionic villi, this is the early embryonic component of the developing placenta. The chorionic lavae (lower half) is smooth and chorionic villi are absent, this faces towards the maternal decidua capsularis.
Amniotic sac - embryo near fills the amniotic sac. Later this sac will continue to expand and eventually fuse with the chorionic sac, its own space is then lost.
Yolk sac - is now much smaller than the embryo and lies on the ventral side by the umbilicus. Later this will remain as a small remnant structure on the inner wall of the chorionic sac.
