Introduction
Franz Keibel (1861-1929) was a German anatomist and embryologist. Beginning in 1897 he was the editor of the series "vertebrate embryological standard stages" (Normentafeln zur Entwicklungsgeschichte der Wirbeltiere), published in German, each volume covered a specific vertebrate species. This included human embryos (Homo sapiens). These standard tables form the basis of the modern embryological staging systems.
Born in Berlin (July 6, 1861) he studied medicine in both Berlin and Strasbourg. Received his doctorate in Strasbourg in 1887 "The natives of the Canaries" (Die Urbewohner der Canaren). He was appointed as professor at the University of Strasbourg in 1914 and then was the successor to Oscar Hertwig in Berlin in 1922. He held honorary doctorates from the University of St Andrews , University of Birmingham and Harvard University.
He was editor of the "Normal Plates of Development" series, and co-authored the Elze Normal Plates of the Development of the Human Embryo (Homo sapiens).[1]
Human embryo (Embryo Klb) 5-6 somites, used in many studies of early human development.
Co-edited with Franklin Mall the historic two volume textbook Manual of Human Embryology 1 (1910) and Manual of Human Embryology 2 (1912).[2][3]

Keibel (1861-1929), P. Ancel (1873-1961), P. Vintemberger (1891-1983), J. Benoit (1896-1982), and E. Wolff, were all embryologists who had worked in Strasbourg.
Etienne Wolff carried out studies on chicken development, and later supervised Nicole M. Le Douarin, famous for her groundbreaking work on neural crest development. |
