General Objectives

To understand the main histological features of the peripheral and central parts of the nervous system (PNS and CNS).

Dermatomes

Dermatomes.png Map of skin innervation pattern by specific spinal cord segmental nerves (dermatomes).


The vertebral level that the nerve exits is used to identify the spinal nerves.

Neuron cartoon.jpg

Neuron - is the cell type forming the functional unit of the nervous system.



Glial cell - is the non-neuronal cell associated with the neuron cell processes. There are different glia types in the central nervous system (oligodendrocytes) and associated with the peripheral nerves (Schwann cells).
