I am offering a voluntary tutorial session Thur 17 Aug between 12-1 PM in Scenario room G02. This room is located first door on your left as you enter Wallace Wurth building from from the Michael Birth garden entrance. Note the scenario room does not have recording facilities.

This is a voluntary tutorial session and attendance is not compulsory. Notice of this tutorial was on Moodle Course Announcements.

The tutorial will be an opportunity for students to ask any questions you may have about the content within the first 3 online lectures. Please feel free to post any questions or content you would like covered to Moodle.

Tutorials will not introduce new concepts or material. They are meant for revision of the preceding online lectures. Though I am happy to answer questions about any preceding embryology content/concepts.

Face to face lecture audio

Some of the lecture audio is of poor quality and cannot be heard on the Lecture+ recordings. I will discuss with the other coordinator whether I will make earlier recordings of this content available online. Note archive recordings may not match the current content and the current lecture slides should be used for theory revision.

I think this is the lecture with poor audio quality. While I do not have a Science Lecture available I have added the Medicine equivalent content.

Where should I start with the online lecture

  • Begin with the lecture objectives.
  • Content on the online page is the main theory content. Opening images/graphs/links provides additional support information to help understand the main concepts.
  • You can also toggle open the page content to see the major sub-headings.
  • "Abnormalities" are included to demonstrate the relevance of the topic. They are generally not the focus of the theory content, but helps to know.
  • Online page usually includes an archive lecture recording that can be referred to see how the concepts are explained by the lecturer in previous years.

I had thought that the forum was available to students, but now see you cannot add topics. I will generate a new discussion area above the groups discussion. Please feel free to test.

What will be in the exam

Always asked by students all the time. My answers below are about the general draft structure, the content will be revised in the lecture towards the end of this current course.

  • Questions from the lecture theory component of the course.
  • 2 hour theory exam in UNSW exam period.
  • Total of 6 short essay answer questions.
    • Question 1 - 3 from 5 options
    • Question 2 - 3 from 5 options
  • No additional exam materials (computers or textbooks allowed).
  • Answer booklets provided.

What else was covered

  • There were additional questions asked but not minuted here. I will add additional information if it comes to mind.
  • In general I went through the 3 online lectures and gave opportunities for students to ask about any issues had with the content.



Histology is a prerequisite to this course and it is expected that students would already have an understanding of the ovary and testis structure.

  • Exchange students if they have not previously covered should review the histology information within the lecture.
  • Briefly covered both Ovary follicle development and Testis seminiferous tubule structure.
  • The process of gametogenesis and its differences in male/female were covered.
  • You should already have an general understanding of the differences between meiosis and mitosis.

Week 3

Week 3 Development

What are the mani developmental processes that occur during week 3?

  • Remember that the lecture covered mainly embryonic development and that placental development is occurring at the same time, but covered in another lecture.
  • Embryo concepts - Gastrulation, axial process, embryo axes, embryo folding, cardiogenesis.


Placenta Development

This is where the development of the extra-embryonic tissues is described - placenta, fetal membranes (coeloms) and the maternal decidua. Note some of these concepts covered in the Preimplantation and Early Implantation Lab exercises this week.

  • Placentation commences at implantation.
  • Identify the names of different uterine (decimal) regions relative to the site of implantation.

Trophoblast cells

  • Week 2 - developing from the blastocyst shell into 2 cell populations.
    • cytotrophoblast cells and syncitiotrophoblast cells (that form by fusion of the cytotrophoblast cells)
    • Secrete hCG to maintain the corpus luteum and the pregnancy.

Villi - are the functional units of the placenta.

  • Villi develop through stages (primary, secondary, tertiary) and have different cell structures.
  • Wek 3 - gastrulation generates the extra-embryonic mesoderm for the villi and cover the membranes.
  • Villi development and density divides the chorion into 2 halves:
    • frondosum - many villi therefore "leafy" where the placenta develops, towards the maternal decimal basalis.
    • laeve - few villi theferore "smooth" away from the placenta develops, towards the uterine cavity and covered with decimal capsularis.


I will provide a second tutorial after the next batch of online lectures (8, 10, 12) have been covered. Possibly Thur 7 Sep between 11-12 PM location TBD. I have made it an earlier time following a student request, let me know if this earlier time is not suitable.
