This 5-day-old infant is in the alert, quiet state.
  • Assessing motor function of the upper extremities begins with passive range of motion.
  • This is done by rotating each extremity at the shoulder, elbow and wrist and feeling the resistance and the range of movement.
  • Too little or too much resistance reflects hypotonia or hypertonia.
  • Further testing helps to better define tone and any tone abnormalities.
