This 5-day-old infant is in the alert, quiet state.
  • The baby should have a strong coordinated suck reflex with good stripping action of the tongue.
  • There should be resistance to pulling out the pacifier.
  • A root reflex is obtained by gently stroking the cheek towards the lips.
  • The baby should open the mouth towards the stimulus and turn the head to latch on to the object.
