Human Embryo Limb Rotation

Arrows have been superimposed upon this Carnegie stage 19 embryo to show the direction in which the upper and lower limbs rotate during development.

Limb Upper Lower
Rotates dorsally (laterally) ventrally (medially)
Rostral thumb toe
Outward elbow faces outward knee faces outward
Extensor muscles   lateral and posterior of limb    anterior aspect of limb

This distinctive embryonic rotation also establishes the future sensory pattern of dermatomes, segmentally patterned before this rotation.
