Human Embryo Limb Rotation
Arrows have been superimposed upon this Carnegie stage 19 embryo to show the direction in which the upper and lower limbs rotate during development.
Upper Limb | Lower limb |
---|---|
rotates dorsally (laterally) | rotates ventrally (medially) |
thumb rostral and elbow faces outward | toe rostral and knee faces outward |
extensor muscles - lateral and posterior of limb | extensor muscles - anterior aspect of limb |
This distinctive embryonic rotation also establishes the future sensory pattern of dermatomes, segmentally patterned before this rotation.
