Human Embryo Limb Rotation

Arrows have been superimposed upon this Carnegie stage 19 embryo to show the direction in which the upper and lower limbs rotate during development.

Upper Limb Lower limb
rotates dorsally (laterally)

thumb rostral and elbow faces outward

extensor muscles - lateral and posterior of limb

rotates ventrally (medially)

toe rostral and knee faces outward

extensor muscles - anterior aspect of limb

This distinctive embryonic rotation also establishes the future sensory pattern of dermatomes, segmentally patterned before this rotation.
