Bone structure cartoon

Bone structure showing both compact and spongy bone and an example of the "bone unit" the osteon or Haversian system. At the core of this is located the Haversian canal, containing blood vessels and nerves.

Haversian system and canal named after Clopton Havers (1657 - 1702) an English physician who did pioneering histology research on bone structure.
