By the ingrowth of the v. cardinalis posterior the urogenital fold is enlarged at the expense of the retroperitoneum, the lateral bay of the body cavity (Fig. 547) penetrates deeply into the latter, and the modification of the base of the fold is thus begun. Compare the depths of the lateral bay of the body cavity in Figs. 547 and 54S. The Malpighian corpuscle determines, as in the preceding figure, the position of the summit of the fold. A new summit has formed near the excretory duct.
