Adult Diencephalon

The region of the brain that includes the thalamus, metathalamus, hypothalamus, epithalamus, prethalamus or subthalamus and pretectum.

The secondary brain vesicles diencephalon and the telencephalon are both derived from the primary brain vesicle prosencephalon (forebrain).

Hypothalamus

  • large neurosecretory cells (neurons) of the supraoptic nucleus (SON) and the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) project to the neurohypophysis.
  • Other key nuclei within the hypothalamus include - sexually dimorphic nucleus (SDN), intermediate nucleus, (INAH-1), suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and tuberal lateral nucleus (NTL).
