Human Embryo Head Region (Week 8, Carnegie Stage 22)

Section through the Week 8 human embryo oral cavity, skull, auditory and neural components. Superimposed measurements of different structures within the stage 22 embryo head. Compare these sizes with those seen in the feral, newborn and adult head.

  • Oral cavity - midline tongue, unfused palatal shelves.
  • Skull - temporal bone still present as cartilage template and not yet ossified.
  • Auditory - external, middle and inner ear components. Note undifferentiated cochlear.
  • Neural - cranial nerve 8 (CNVIII), brain stem region, ventricular space and choroid plexuses.
