Thymus Histology - Adult Involution

  • After puberty much of the parenchyma of the thymus is replaced by adipose tissue (adipocytes).
  • particularly cortical lymphoid tissue.
  • initially proceeds rapid but slows down in adulthood.
  • process is called involution
  • under the control of steroid hormones
    • both sexual hormones and stress hormones.
