Skeletal preparations of E17.5 wild-type mouse fetus stained with alcian blue for cartilage and alizarin red for bone.

• The metatarsals mid-shaft region show a "collar" of newly forming bone within existing cartilage within the paw.
• The tibia and fibula (bottom of image) show a similar, though larger, region of newly forming bone.
