Nucleus - Cajal Bodies

Located within the cell nucleus these bodies have also been called: nucleolar accessory bodies, coiled body, gems. Their size is about 0.1 - 2.0 microns, numbering about 1 to 10 in each nucleus. Proposed sites where small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs) and small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNPs) are modified.

Ramón y Cajal first identified and christened them "nucleolar accessory bodies". PMID 14685175

Recently the Fragile X protein (FMRP) isoforms 6 and 12 (ISO6 and 12) were localized to the Cajal bodies in cultured human cells. PMID 24204304

  • A - HeLa cells expressing an FP–coilin fusion protein (arrows indicate Cajal bodies).
  • B - Fluorescence micrograph of purified CBs immunolabeled with anticoilin antibodies.
  • C - Field emission scanning electron micrograph of a purified CB.
  • D - Transmission electron micrograph of a purified CB. Coilin is immunolabeled with 5 nm gold (arrows) and SMN is immunolabeled with 10 nm gold (arrowheads).

Bars: (A and B) 10 μm; (C) 500 nm; (D) 200 nm.

(CB) Ramon y Cajal originally identified (1903) these small structures located in the cell nucleus. They have various suggested functions including ribonucleoprotein functions and RNA maturation. During the cell cycle they disassemble and reassemble, and are localized to the nucleolar periphery or within the nucleoli. The protein coilin is located within Cajal bodies.
