Pharyngeal Arch Structure cartoon
Simplified representation showing contribution of 3 germ cell layers and terminology.
- arch - mesoderm and neural crest (ectoderm) contribute the core mesenchyme of each arch.
- cleft - (groove) ectoderm externally separates each arch (only first pair persist as external auditory meatus)
- pouch - endoderm internally separates each arch (pockets out from the pharynx)
- membrane - ectoderm and endoderm contact regions (only first pair persist as tympanic membrane)
