Human Pronuclear Stage - Crystalline inclusions

  • Crystalline inclusions such as those shown in these micrographs are present in limited numbers throughout the cytoplasm of the penetrated ovum.
  • They are thought to represent ooplasmic yolk.
  • When observed in cross-section (Fig. 12), the inclusions appear to be composed of 10 to 25 parallel, faintly striated rods.
  • In an oblique or tangential plane (Fig. 18), the rods form hexagonal crystalline arrays.
  • Note the pointed profile of one of these inclusions in the lower left corner of the micrograph.
