Aortic Arch

Anatomical position and relationships:

  • Arch of the aorta begins at the level of the upper border of the second sternocostal articulation of the right side
  • Arch runs at first upward, backward, and to the left in front of the trachea
  • Arch then directed backward on the left side of the trachea
  • Arch finally passes downward on the left side of the body of the fourth thoracic vertebra
  • Arch at the lower border of the fourth thoracic vertebral body it becomes continuous with the descending aorta
  • Arch upper border is about 2.5 cm. below the superior border to the manubrium sterni

Forms two curvatures:

  1. convexity upward
  2. convexity forward and to the left
