Ascidians (sea squirts) are the evolutionary link between invertebrates and vertebrates. Conklin's 1905 detailed developmental cell lineage study of the ascidian embryo, that inspired similar studies in other species. This also set the stage for identifying embryonic patterning. Edwin Grant Conklin (1863 – 1952) was an American biologist and zoologist at the Department of Biology at Princeton University.
