Symphysiotomy

- This historical surgical technique, developed in Europe late in the 18th century, has been used to save the lives of mother and child in obstructed labour.
- Still used in some countries in remote areas without easy access to medical facilities.
- The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates annual global obstructed labour related maternal mortality at 50,000.
