Mean for Placental Weight by Gestational Age
Increase in placental weight by birth gestational age GA.
Data: Medical Birth Registry of Norway (1999–02) graph based on data within PMID 17516963.
Norwegian Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology guideline "the placenta should preferably be weighed without the cord and membranes" (not identified whether this has been observed.
The weight is dependent on the amount of intervillous blood and blood in fetal vessels, and is reduced by about 50 g in weight after some postnatal hours.

American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Committee (PMID 24150030 2013 Opinion no 579) recommended that "term" be replaced with the more specific terminology related to gestational age:
- early term - 37 0/7 weeks of gestation through 38 6/7 weeks of gestation.
- full term - 39 0/7 weeks of gestation through 40 6/7 weeks of gestation.
- late term - 41 0/7 weeks of gestation through 41 6/7 weeks of gestation.
- postterm - 42 0/7 weeks of gestation and beyond.
