Neutrophil and Eosinophil

Image shows human blood neutrophil (left) and eosinophil (right) surrounded by red blood cells.

Neutrophil

  • neutrophil granulocyte
  • nucleus is divided into 3-5 lobes connected by thin strands of chromatin.
  • lobe number increases with cell age (old cells up to 7 lobes).
  • contain two types of granules.
    • primary granules (A granules) contain lysosomal enzymes and are probably primary lysosomes, though they are larger (0.4 µm) than the typical primary lysosome.
    • secondary granules (B granules), the specific granules of the neutrophils, contain enzymes with strong bactericidal actions. These granules stain only weakly if they are at all visible ("neutral").

Eosinophil

  • eosinophil granulocyte
  • nucleus usually has only two lobes.
  • cytoplasm appears filled with the specific granules of the eosinophils.
  • granules are not neutral but stain red or pink when eosin dye.
  • contain some large rounded vesicles (up to 1 µm in diameter) in their cytoplasm.
  • granules (lysosomes) contain an electron-dense, proteinaceous crystal of major basic protein (MBP).
