Monochorionic Twin Placenta

Monochorionic twin pregnancies increased risk of perinatal mortality/morbidity due to:
  • twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS)
  • selective intrauterine growth restriction (sIUGR)
  • higher incidence of congenital heart malformations
Legend
  • arteries - blue and green
  • veins - red and yellow
  • white star - large arterio-arterial anastomosis
  • blue stars - several arterio-venous anastomoses
  • green stars - veno-arterial anastomoses

Monochorionic placenta after color dye injection showing typical features of unequal sharing.

Twin B Twin A
  • velamentous cord insertion (white arrow)
  • small placental territory (left side)
  • paracentral cord insertion (grey arrow)
  • larger placental territory (right side)
