Mary Ellen Avery

Prof. Mary Ellen Avery (1927 - 2011) was the first woman to chair a major department at Harvard Medical School when she was appointed the Thomas Morgan Rotch Professor of Pediatrics. In the 1950s, her pioneering research efforts helped lead to the discovery of the main cause of newborn respiratory distress syndrome (or Hyaline Membrane Disease) in premature babies.
