Human Liver Histology - Hepatocytes

Liver histology showing detail of hepatocyte organization. H&E x20

Hepatocyte Structure=

  • form about 80% of all liver cells
  • large polyhedral cells
  • large round centrally located nuclei
  • frequently polyploid[1]

Hepatocyte Function

  • glucose storage in the form of glycogen (SER)
  • vitamin A (possibly in specialized adipocytes), vitamin B12, folic acid and iron storage
  • lipid turnover and transport
  • plasmalipoproteins synthesis takes place almost exclusively in the liver (RER/SER)
  • plasma protein synthesis (albumin, α and β globulins, prothrombin, fibrinogen; RER)
  • metabolize/detoxify fat soluble compounds (drugs, insecticides; SER)
  • steroid hormone turnover
  • bile secretion (up to 1 liter per day from the whole liver)
