Human Liver Histology - Hepatocytes
Liver histology showing detail of hepatocyte organization. H&E x20
Hepatocyte Structure=
- form about 80% of all liver cells
- large polyhedral cells
- large round centrally located nuclei
- frequently polyploid[1]
Hepatocyte Function
- glucose storage in the form of glycogen (SER)
- vitamin A (possibly in specialized adipocytes), vitamin B12, folic acid and iron storage
- lipid turnover and transport
- plasmalipoproteins synthesis takes place almost exclusively in the liver (RER/SER)
- plasma protein synthesis (albumin, α and β globulins, prothrombin, fibrinogen; RER)
- metabolize/detoxify fat soluble compounds (drugs, insecticides; SER)
- steroid hormone turnover
- bile secretion (up to 1 liter per day from the whole liver)
