Ductulus Efferens

Spermatozoa pass from convoluted tubules through:

  1. tubuli recti (low columnar epithelium)
  2. rete testis (flattened or cuboidal epithelium)
  3. ductuli efferentes (lined by a columnar epithelium)

Ductuli efferentes

  • epithelium consist of both absorptive and ciliated cells.
    • height of the two cells types is variable giving the lumen a characteristic wavy outline.
  • leave the testis and open into a common duct, the ductus epididymidis (about 6 m long).

ductus epididymidis

  • lined by a tall pseudostratified columnar epithelium.
  • principal cells have long stereocilia.
    • Stereocilia are non-motile structures that in the EM resemble large microvilli.
  • basal cells of the ductus epididymidis regenerate the epithelium.
