Ductulus Efferens
Spermatozoa pass from convoluted tubules through:
- tubuli recti (low columnar epithelium)
- rete testis (flattened or cuboidal epithelium)
- ductuli efferentes (lined by a columnar epithelium)
Ductuli efferentes
- epithelium consist of both absorptive and ciliated cells.
- height of the two cells types is variable giving the lumen a characteristic wavy outline.
- leave the testis and open into a common duct, the ductus epididymidis (about 6 m long).
ductus epididymidis
- lined by a tall pseudostratified columnar epithelium.
- principal cells have long stereocilia.
- Stereocilia are non-motile structures that in the EM resemble large microvilli.
- basal cells of the ductus epididymidis regenerate the epithelium.
