Embryo brain flexures

Midline section of stage 13 embryo showing the 3 brain flexures formed during early neural tube development.


Rapid growth folds the neural tube forming 3 brain flexures:

  1. cranial (cephalic) flexure - pushes mesencephalon upwards
  2. pontine flexure - generates 4th ventricle
  3. cervical flexure - between brain stem and spinal cord
