The nares are widely separated and directed forwards (fig. 2). Their openings are small and partly occluded by plugs of epithelium. They are bounded laterally by thick alas nasi; The mouth is open, exposing the tip of the tongue. The upper lip has a shallow median notch. The lower lip is a smooth rounded shelf, with no trace of its bilateral origin. There is a distinct double chin, which is seen also in an embryo figured by His.
