Mammary glands are peculiar to mammals. In embryos of about 9 mm. paired ectodermal thickenings extend lengthwise between the bases of the limb buds (Fig. 234). This linear ridge is the milk line. In man it often is inconspicuous except in the pectoral region, but in lower mammals, like the pig, that have serially repeated glands, a prominent thickening reaches from axilla to groin ([[:File:Arey1924 fig239.jpg|Fig. 389]]).
