Anencephaly is a condition referred to as "without a brain" because parts of the brain and skull are not properly developed. The nervous tissue undergoes degeneration so the brain remains as a spongy vascular mass. <pubmed><10.7860/JCDR/2014/10402.4885><pubmed>. It is now called Meroanencephaly because some functioning neural tissue is present.
