Schmorl's Stain

  • Designed to show canaliculi and lamellae in bone sections.
  • not a staining reaction in the classical sense of the word.
  • stain is made up of two colouring agents, ammoniacal thionin and aqueous saturated picric acid.
  • thionin precipitates within the lacunae and canaliculi whilst the picric acid forms picrates in the bone matrix.
  • lacunae and canaliculi are dark brown to black whilst bone matrix is yellow or brownish-yellow.
