Chronic Chorioamnionitis

Histological characteristics of chronic chorioamnionitis (CCA) an inflammation of the fetal membranes (amnion and chorion) due to a bacterial infection.

  • Stage 1 ((a, b) inflammation showing infiltration of lymphocytes limited to the chorionic trophoblast layer (a). CD3 immunostaining demonstrates that the majority of these cells are T cells (b).
  • Stage 2 (c, d) inflammation is characterized by infiltration of lymphocytes into the chorioamniotic connective tissue layer (H&E, c), which are largely CD3+ T cells (d).
