Measurement of Deviations of the Spine with Scoliometry
Scoliometry
- using a Pedi-Scoliometer (Pedihealth Oy, Oulu, Finland) to measure spine deviation.
- In structural scoliosis an asymmetry of the two halves of the back is seen.
Moiré topography
- Spinal deviations were previously measured using Moiré topography.
- Moiré topography is a biosteriometric method producing a three-dimensional image of the shape of the trunk.
Cobb angle
- named after the American orthopedic surgeon John Robert Cobb (1903 - 1967).
- originally used to measure coronal plane deformity on antero-posterior plain radiographs in the classification of scoliosis.
- been adapted to classify sagittal plane deformity.
- for the setting of traumatic thoracolumbar spine fractures.
- angle formed between a line drawn parallel to the superior endplate of one vertebra above the fracture and a line drawn parallel to the inferior endplate of the vertebra one level below the fracture.
