The gastrointestinal tract is involved in the breakdown of the milk carbohydrate disaccharide lactose into glucose (2) and galactose (1) for nutrition.

Lactose

  • is found only in milk and a small number of plants
  • gives milk a sweet taste
  • contributes approximately 40% of whole cow's milk's calories
