The gastrointestinal tract is involved in the breakdown of the milk carbohydrate disaccharide lactose into glucose (2) and galactose (1) for nutrition.
Lactose
- is found only in milk and a small number of plants
- gives milk a sweet taste
- contributes approximately 40% of whole cow's milk's calories
