A. Reconstruction of the surface of the caudal portion of the embryonic shield, i.e. the portion bent ventrally to form the tail fold. In the midline is the primitive groove. Area. in which mesoderm crosses the midline is shown in black.

B. Reconstruction of a median sagittal section (see Pl. I, fig. 1). Description in text. Ectoderm—interrupted horizontal lines; endoderm—fine stippling; dense mesoderm—black; primitive streak—horizontal lines.
