Natural and Induced Intraepithelial Lymphocyte Function

The beneficial roles of natural and induced intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) in preserving the epithelium and restoring tissue integrity after injury.

  • Natural IELs - (previously ‘type b’ IELs) acquire activated phenotype during development in the thymus in the presence of self antigens.
  • Induced IELs - (previously ‘type a’ IELs) progeny of conventional T cells activated post-thymically in response to peripheral antigens.
