The section is to one side of the blastopore (compare with Pl. 2, fig. 4). Vascular spaces containing a few fi'ee developing blood corpusoleslare visible in the lower part of the section; they are lined on their distal aspect and sides by endothelioid cells with rounded or lens-like nuclei; on the central side, however, the mesothelial layer is often defective and the wall of the space is formed by entoderm.
