In fig. 18, for example, the mesocolic area, b, is fixed between the gut and the straight dotted line: to the left of this the mesentery would hang free, so that the obliquely directed “attached border of the mesentery” is really the extreme left limit of the area of adhesion of the mesocolon of the loop.
