In the first figure the left umbilical vein passes up mainly to the left of the liver but is also sending offshoots below it which Join the vitelline system. In the second figure this anastomosis forms now the main left umbilical drainage, and is carried down on the visceral aspect of the liver. the hepatic end of the vein swinging in the direction of the arrow. The result is that the proximal limb is folded over to the right.
