zebrafish

fish model of vertebrate embryological development. Embryos ar translucent and large number of known (and manufactured) mutants. (More? Other Embryos - Zebrafish)

ZIFT

acronym for Zygote Intra Fallopian Transfer, a procedure in which eggs are collected from a woman's ovaries and fertilized outside her body. A laparoscope is then used to assist in placing the resulting zygote (fertilized egg) into the woman's uterine (fallopian) tube through small incisions in her abdomen. (More? Week 1 Notes - In Vitro Fertilization)

ZP1

acronym for Zona Pellucida Binding Protein, a glycoprotein found in zona pellucida surrounding the egg. (More? Week 1 - Fertilization | Week 1 - Oogenesis | [#zona_pellucida_binding_protein_1 zona pellucida binding protein 1])

ZP2

acronym for Zona Pellucida Binding Protein 2, a glycoprotein found in zona pellucida surrounding the egg. Before [F.htm#fertilization fertilization] ZP2 binds spermatozoa. After [F.htm#fertilization fertilization] ZP2 is proteolytically cleaved as an initial block to polyspermy. (More? Week 1 - Fertilization | Week 1 - Oogenesis | [#zona_pellucida_binding_protein_1 zona pellucida binding protein 1])

ZP3

acronym for Zona Pellucida Binding Protein 3, a glycoprotein found in zona pellucida surrounding the egg required for initial zona matrix formation and during [F.htm#fertilization fertilization] for species-specific sperm binding. Now thought to exist in 2 isoforms ZP3A and ZP3B (a second polymorphic allele). (More? Week 1 - Fertilization | Week 1 - Oogenesis | [#zona_pellucida_binding_protein_1 zona pellucida binding protein 1])

ZPBP1

acronym for Zona Pellucida Binding Protein 1 A spermatozoa protein found located on the acrosome surface. (More? Week 1 - Fertilization | Week 1 - Oogenesis | [#zona_pellucida_binding_protein_1 zona pellucida binding protein 1])

zona pellucida

(Latin, zona pellucida = transparent zone) A specialized [E.htm#extracellular_matrix extracellular matrix] surrounds the developing [O.htm#oocyte oocyte] (egg, ovum) within the ovary and follwing [O.htm#ovulation ovulation]. It consists of three types of glycoproteins [#ZP1 ZP1], [#ZP2 ZP2] and [#ZP3 ZP3] which have different roles in fertilization. Following fertilization, the zona pellucida also surrounds the blastocyst during the first week of development, from which it "hatches". The zona pellucida has a role in [F.htm#fertilization fertilization], sperm binding, preventing [P.htm#polyspermy polyspermy], [B.htm#blastocyst blastocyst] development and preventing premature implantation (ectopic pregnancy). (More? Week 1 - Fertilization | Week 1 - Oogenesis | [#zona_pellucida_binding_protein_1 zona pellucida binding protein])

zona pellucida binding protein 1

(ZPBP1) A spermatozoa protein found located on the acrosome surface which has a role during [S.htm#spermiogenesis spermiogenesis] (acrosome compaction, Sertoli-spermatid junctions) and also binds the zona pellucida during [F.htm#fertilization fertilization]. (More? Week 1 - Fertilization | Week 1 - Fertilization)

zoonotic disease

an animal disease that can be transmitted to humans. This can be through contact with animals (pets, farm animals, wildlife) or their products (milk, meat, waste). (More? Toxoplasmosis | [Q.htm#Qfever Q Fever])

zygote

The first diploid cell that forms following [F.htm#fertilization fertilization] by fusion of haploid [O.htm#oocyte oocyte] (egg) and [S.htm#spermatozoa spermatozoa] (sperm) resulting in the combination of their separate genomes. (More? Week 1 Notes)

zygote intrafallopian transfer

(ZIFT) A procedure in which eggs are collected from a woman's ovaries and fertilized outside her body. A laparoscope is then used to assist in placing the resulting zygote (fertilized egg) into the woman's uterine (fallopian) tube through small incisions in her abdomen. (More?
