Research paper on fertilisation:

<pubmed>11853790</pubmed>

What does this paper tell us about fertilisation?

This paper looks at the risk of neurological problems in children born by In Vitro fertilization (IVF). This study found the children born after IVF had an increased risk of Cerebral palsy. The number of these children having developmental delay was 4 times higher than children born from normal fertilization. IVF children that were born prematurely and have Low birth weights needed assistance from childhood disability centres more frequently than those full term children, born with normal weights. Compared with singletons (single birth children), IVF twins have higher risk of needing habilitation from these disability centres. This study also found no association between maternal age and risk of neurological disorders. The conclusions that can be drawn from this study are:

  • IVF children have higher chance of cerebral palsy amongst other neurological/developmental disorders
  • IVF children are often born prematurely as twins (multiple births)with low birthweights.
  • Thus, increased neurological disorders may be due to multiple births and implanting one embryo during IVF may reduce that chance of neurological disorders in IVF children.
