Schmorl's Stain
- Designed to show canaliculi and lamellae in bone sections.
- not a staining reaction in the classical sense of the word.
- stain is made up of two colouring agents, ammoniacal thionin and aqueous saturated picric acid.
- thionin precipitates within the lacunae and canaliculi whilst the picric acid forms picrates in the bone matrix.
- lacunae and canaliculi are dark brown to black whilst bone matrix is yellow or brownish-yellow.
