During the early stages of development of the otocyst, Sox2 and Sox3 are found in proliferating cells within the proneural region. This suggests that the ongoing expression of Sox2 plays a role in sensory cell development.

A schematic and simplistic representation of the expression of Sox2 and Sox3 during development of the ear.
