Composite model for ethanol effects on fetal neural development

Ethanol causes assymetric neural stem cell (NSC) proliferation. This leads to premature depletion of NSCs in the ventricular zone (VZ) and the ultimately loss of reserve neuron generation capacity. The appearance of radial glial-like neuronal progenitors supports expansion, increases proliferation of neuronal progenitors in the sub-ventricular zone (SVZ) and increases migration of neuronal progenitor cells out of the VZ and SVZ, leading to the formation of heterotopias or displaced neuronal aggregates.
