The part I of the Atlas contains the history of man, was already indicated on the title page, the Embryologia intestinorum (it is thus the intestinal system in the narrow sense meant) then the embryology of the
heart and vessels of the brain and the nerves and finally the sensory bodies. The final form author names, subject index and bibliography.

The publishing firm has agreed to the Atlas was a literature directory attached. This is a somewhat unusual approach. Alone two reasons for this seemed decisive. First, those papers should be named, which a corresponding part of the material for the atlas was taken. This is all in a position to produce the originals of different to complete the same and look at the facts of evolution.

But as the story still considerable gaps in human development has, so would be gone even beyond this limit. Thus, there must of the comparative and experimental evolution approach-something be drawn, since these two areas are the basis for so many Education about the history of man.

The nomenclature of history is no less confused, as once was that of systematic anatomy. Calls for a regulation have been repeatedly made loud<ref>On the XV. international medical congress in Lisbon - April 1906 - The regulation of embryological literature was on the agenda and had an anatomical section dealing with this important task, see Loewenthal, N., Contribution to the unification of the nomenclature and histological terminology. Sonderabdruck 1906.</ref>. With the extensive description the figures and the accompanying texts, I am conservative methods; sometimes the Latin names were preferred, but I am quite Reformation not occurred. Vorrede. 



Der I Teil des Atlas der Entwicklungsgeschichte des Menschen enthält, 
wie schon auf dem Titelblatt angegeben wurde, die Embryologia intestinorum (es 
ist damit das Darmsystem im engen Sinne gemeint) dann die Embryologie des 
Herzens und der Gefäße, des Hirns und der Nerven und endlich der Sinnes- 
organe. Den Schluß bilden Autorennamen, Sachregister und Literaturverzeichnis. 

Die Verlagshandlung war damit einverstanden, dem Atlas ein Literatur- 
verzeichnis beizufügen. Es ist dies ein etwas ungewohntes Vorgehen. Allein 
zwei Gründe wirkten hierfür bestimmend. Zunächst sollten jene Abhandlungen 
namhaft gemacht werden, welchen ein Teil des Materiales für den Atlas ent- 
nommen war. Dadurch wird jeder in den Stand gesetzt, die Originale zu ver- 
gleichen und den Einblick in die Tatsachen der Entwicklung zu vervollständigen. 

Da aber die menschliche Entwicklungsgeschichte noch ansehnliche Lücken 
aufweist, so mußte auch über diese Grenze hinausgegangen werden. Es mußte also 
von der vergleichenden und experimentellen Entwicklungsgeschichte etwas heran- 
gezogen werden, denn diese beiden Gebiete sind die Grundlagen für so manche 
Aufklärung über die Entwicklungsgeschichte des Menschen. 

Die Nomenklatur -der Entwicklungsgeschichte ist nicht minder verworren, 
wie einst jene der systematischen Anatomie war. Rufe nach einer Regelung 
sind schon wiederholt laut geworden *). Bei der ausgiebigen Bezeichnung 
der Figuren und in dem begleitenden Texte bin ich konservativ verfahren; 
bisweilen wurden die lateinischen Namen bevorzugt, doch bin ich durchaus 
nicht reformatorisch aufgetreten. Nur gemeinsames Vorgehen dürfte zu einem 
befriedigenden Ziele führen.

Bei der Reproduktion mancher Abbildungen waren kleine Abänderungen 
vorzunehmen, um den Zusammenhang mit benachbarten Organen zu vervollständigen. Äußere Zutaten werden für das Verständnis oft sehr wertvoll. Ich 
glaube nicht, bei solchen Änderungen das Maß des Zulässigen überschritten zu 
haben. Niemals wurde entscheidend eingegriffen. Sollte es dennoch den An- 
schein haben, so bitte ich um nachsichtige Beurteilung bei dem Umstand, daß 
einem Atlas der Entwicklungsgeschichte des Menschen noch für Jahrzehnte 
jene Vollkommenheit fehlen wird, welche die Atlanten der systematischen Ana- 
tomie heute schon auszeichnet. 

Unter den Autoren ist auch Friedrich Ziegler aufgeführt und damit 
das Atelier für wissenschaftliche Plastik hervorgehoben, das so viele treffliche 
Modelle zum Studium der Entwicklungsgeschichte geliefert hat. Diese Modelle 
stellen den eisernen Bestand unserer Lehrmittel dar und sind von mir vielfach 
benützt worden. Sie bieten mit den Rekonstruktionen einen willkommenen Er- 
satz für die Wiedergabe von Serienschnitten , die als Dokumente zwar großen 
Wert besitzen, aber hier nur sehr beschränkte Verwendung fanden, da sie oft 
Rätsel aufgeben, die nicht leicht zu lösen sind. 

Schematische Figuren wurden möglichst vermieden. Es sollte das beson- 
dere menschliche Gepräge Ausdruck finden. Jede Spezies hat trotz der Zeichen 
tiefgehender Stammesverwandtschaft doch ihren bestimmten anatomischen Bau, 
der durch schematische Figuren der Natur der Sache nach verwischt wird, weil 
sie generalisieren. — Mit dem Ende der achten Woche sind die Hauptformen 
spezifisch menschlicher Gestaltung im ganzen angelegt. Die Mehrzahl der 
Abbildungen stammt denn auch aus den ersten embryonalen Wochen, jedoch 
wurde die fetale Entwicklungsperiode wenigstens in einigen Figuren berück- 
sichtigt; denn im einzelnen ist auch nach der 8. Woche noch vieles auszubauen. 

Wie sehr in der frühesten Zeit die Primatennatur ausgeprägt ist, werden 
manche Abbildungen ausreichend erkennen lassen. Auf einer bestimmten Stufe 
ist diese Übereinstimmung recht ansehnlich, so daß Naturforscher, deren Ruf 
feststeht, dennoch Vögel und Affenembryonen mit denen des Menschen ver- 
wechseln konnten. 

Bezüglich der Orientierung der Figuren hat C. M. Jackson (Anatom. 
Anz. 1902. Bd. XX. S. 300) einige beherzigenswerte Bemerkungen gemacht. 
Sie betreffen zwar vorzugsweise die topographische Anatomie, haben aber eine 
allgemeine Gültigkeit. Man hat die Wahl, die ventrale Oberfläche oder die 
dorsale nach aufwärts zu orientieren. Die erstere Position ist die des anatomischen 
Seziersaales; die Leiche liegt auf dem Rücken und daher ist diese Orientierung 
zumeist gewählt worden bei den Darstellungen. Allein die andere Orientierung, 
die dorsale Fläche nach aufwärts, hat den Vorzug, daß die Beziehungen der 
Organe ebenso erscheinen, als ob der Körper durchsichtig wäre und vor dem 
Auge sich befinde, sei es, daß die Person in stehender, sitzender oder liegen- 



der Haltung gedacht ist. Vom topographischen Standpunkt aus muß man also 
dieser Orientierung den Vorzug geben. 

Für die Entwicklungsgeschichte kommt aber noch eine vergleichend- 
anatomische Erwägung hinzu, die Jackson ebenfalls schon hervorgehoben hat. 
In der vergleichenden Anatomie sind weitaus die meisten Schnitte des Körpers 
mit der dorsalen Fläche nach aufwärts wiedergegeben. Der Grund liegt haupt- 
sächlich darin, daß diese Art der Darstellung die typische Position der Organe 
veranschaulicht, denn der Wirbelkanal und die dorsale Körperfläche liegen 
oberhalb der Körperachse, die Leibeshöhle und die ventrale Fläche dagegen 
nach unten. Ich habe mich an diese wünschbare Art der Orientierung gehalten 
und ebenso an eine andere, welche kranial liegende Organe in den Abbildungen 
in derselben Richtung wiedergibt und solche, welche kaudalwärts liegen, natür- 
lich nach unten wendet. Das scheint so selbstverständlich, daß es fast überflüssig 
erscheint, darüber nur ein Wort zu verlieren. Und doch geschieht nicht selten 
das genau entgegengesetzte. Es wäre erfreulich, wenn auch nach dieser Seite 
hin in der Zukunft ein Fortschritt bemerkbar würde.
