Historic Embryology
Oscar Hertwig (1849-1922)

Oscar Hertwig (1849-1922) was a German embryologist and anatomist who first identified in amphibia the epithelial root sheath (HERS) of the tooth. In amphibia it remains as a permanent structure, in mammals it is a transient structure assembled in the early period of root formation and elongation. Later becoming fenestrated and reduced to the epithelial rests of Malassez (ERM)[1]
