nucleus basalis - (N. Basalis of Meynert, NBM) Group of cholinergic neurons in the substantia innominata of the basal forebrain which project to the neocortex. Functions thought to control behavioral state in animals, regulating arousal and attention via release of acetylcholine in the cortex.
