Obituary
Dr. William F. Windle, a research neurologist who specialized in nerve regeneration, died of Parkinson's disease Wednesday at his home in Granville, Ohio. He was 86 years old.
In 1948 Dr. Windle, Dr. William Chambers and two associates at the University of Pennsylvania conducted important studies of nerve cell growth in cats with damaged spinal columns. Their studies were seen as having wide potential applications in the treatment of injuries and some diseases, including mental retardation and cerebral palsy.
Dr. Windle worked at several university and national laboratories, including the Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University from 1964 to 1971.
William Frederick Windle was born in Huntington, Ind., in 1898. He received a bachelor's degree from Denison University in Granville and a master's degree and Ph.D. from Northwestern University, where he taught for 24 years. He later served as head of the anatomy department at the University of Washington Medical School and at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.
In 1954 Dr. Windle was appointed chief of the Laboratory of Neuroanatomical Sciences at the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness at Bethesda, Md. In 1960 he became chief of the laboratory for perinatal physiology in San Juan, P.R. He left the institute in 1971 to become a research professor at Denison University.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ella Howell; a brother, Kirk K. Windle of North Palm Beach, Fla., and three grandchildren.
